Although almost unknown during his lifetime today Vincent Van Gogh is considered one of the world’s most celebrated artists and has had a profound

influence on today’s modern art.

Van Gogh had artistic talent as a child but he and his family did not expect that that talent would blossom into a career. At the age of 16 he worked for Goupil and Company, an art gallery which his uncle was associated with. He later went on to serve as a lay minister in a coal-mining town in Belgium. Having failed at both of these jobs Van Gogh chose to pursue a career in art.

Over the course of Van Gogh’s short 10 year art career he produced over 800 paintings and more than 1,100 drawings. His brother Theo helped to financially support him during these years. Many of his paintings appeared in exhibitions in Paris and Brussels however at the time of his death he had only sold one painting. By the time of his death in 1890 his work had begun to attract critical praise.
